What's it really like
to work at home?
That depends a lot on your home. If it's always full of kids
or neighbors or traveling salesmen, it can make everything seem even more
hectic. If it's just you and your goldfish, that's a different story. There are
people who like and need all that social interaction masquerading as work in an
office environment and those who feel that working alone would be a dream come
true.
Is working at home
hard?
Aside from the previous answer, let me just say that it is WORKing
at home - real genuine effort-required work. If your research has helped you
find a business you truly enjoy, you probably won't think of it as work or even
mind all you must do to ultimately make it successful.
How many months
before I can quit my day job?
If you work hard enough and consistently enough, it would
take up to
24 months...or more. And every one of them will require you to work
your business virtually every spare waking moment and perhaps lots of moments
when you normally would be sleeping. It has been done in less time, but by very
few people who basically gave up sleeping, family life etc. The reason why most
give up working at home is because they think they'll be overnight successes.
The truth is it takes years to become an overnight success.
Do I have to spend
any money working at home? I hear there's lots of free resources.
Yes...and no.
If you're looking for a work-at-home JOB rather than a
business, you should never pay to be employed by someone. That behavior screams
SCAM!!!, so run, don't walk away from that situation. However, if you intend to
go into business, you must spend money on good resources, tools and educational
materials. Most free stuff only covers a little of their subject. Sometimes
that might be all you need, sometimes you need more. Then there's advertising,
supplies and so on.
Ask any business owner anywhere if they do it without
spending any money and they'll look at you like you have a moose sitting on
your head. The old saying is still true - you gotta spend money to make money.
It doesn't need to be a lot at first, but good, well thought out purchasing decisions will help a lot.
My family thinks I'm
crazy to work at home and don't believe I really do anything. How can I show
them I'm serious?
By including them in what you're doing! Explain it all and
how it works.
If you can involve them directly, do so. If you're in business,
be sure to tell them that it takes time for any business to become profitable
and just because you're not making money right away, it doesn't mean you never
will. Remember, most folks have been conditioned all their lives that going to
work means leaving the house. Give 'em an education and instead of being on
your back, they'll be behind you pushing!
How about free
websites? Why pay for one when I can get one free?
The only reason a free website is free to you is because
someone
else owns it. It may look exactly like every other site your company
provides or it may be filled with ads for the benefit of the supplier,
not you.
The website name is usually about a half a mile long too.
You no longer have to be a techie geek to set up your own
website. There are some darn good website builders available that really
simplify the whole process. There's also lots of website designers if you
really, really, reeeeally don't want to do it yourself. Whichever way you go,
just DO it. Creating a unique presence for yourself will prove very valuable
and give you and your business lots more credibility.
