DSL Internet Access
DSL internet access is cable broadband internet access' chief competitor. It's not as fast as cable broadband internet access, but it has some advantages of its own.
Personally, I am surrounded on all sides by DSL availibility but I'm unable to get it myself. I can literally drive 10 miles to a covered area in any direction. Incredible, huh?
I've used it (more than my wife appreciated) while we were visiting family members that lived in a covered area and used Verizon Online DSL. It's currently the biggest and supposedly the best, with more in the works.
With their Verizon DSL setup, I had unlimited access just like cable
(not a big hit with my wife either) 24/7 support just like cable and dedicated bandwidth usage...not like cable.
I discovered that DSL gives you exclusive access through your connection to the nearest DSL central office. This makes a more
secure connection, because the bandwidth is not shared with other users in your area...like cable.
Still, I've had no security problems with my broadband internet access by using good security software such as Norton or McAfee that covers all the bases. I keep them scanning on a regular basis and automatically updating all the time.
Verizon Online DSL service also provides a self-installation kit, which was how my relatives installed theirs. If they could do it, believe me, anyone can!
One drawback of DSL is the weakening of the connection if your location is far away from the nearest DSL central office. It's worth asking about before you commit to it, especially if cable internet
access is also available in the area.
If DSL internet access is the fastest available in your area but you want more, there's something called VDSL in the works that could speed things up a bit more.
If there's cable service in your area, I'd say go for it. If not but Verizon DSL is, it's definitely the next best thing.
Check out if Verizon Online DSL is available to you!
