You Got To Move It, Move It or The Madagascar Method
by Dan Reinhold
Did I say "we ALL loved it"?? Actually, my wife did NOT. She didn't really go for the character who sang it and told us three guys so in plain terms. BIG mistake... Of course, all summer long, whenever one of us might be in Mom's way and she says, "Move it, move it!!" in that endearingly impatient way of hers, we would all break out in song and the obligatory dance. Now I'm not writing simply to tell you of our sadistic family torture rituals. Bear with me! It can be very easy to settle in one spot and wait for the world to beat a path to your door or website or mall kiosk or whatever. You might figure that entrenchng yourself in one comfy spot, whether real or virtual, without checking out that big picture called the world/life/the Internet, you'll be ready when that huge crowd that MUST have what you've got comes a-clamoring. In that case, you better get real comfy, because it's gonna be a long lonely wait. When you're in business of any kind, you must be seen where the people who need to see you are located and not some spot of your own choosing. You and your business have got to "move it, move it" to be noticed, known and then visited. If you're in direct sales, the more that's seen by potential customers, the more potential customers you'll see. your company probably has some excellent materials you could spread around. Go grab a crowbar and pry open that rusty old wallet and purchase some. You ARE in business and you can expect reasonable costs. If you have an online business, do what gets you noticed there. It's not playing online games and visiting those sites your grandmother would smack you good for peeking. Register with a few forums that feel right to you, depending on what you do and ask good questions. Hook up with someone in a complementary business to discuss cross-promotion approaches. Beware becoming a "forum rat" spending lots of valuable time on too many worthless topics. That's perfectly good RGA (Revenue Generating Activity) time you alloted for business purposes. Although many say otherwise, you do need to work to make so much as a penny online! Oh yeah..one more thing. The whole "work-in-your-jammies-all-day" deal definitely is appealing, but you still have to clean up, get out and get spotted. Attend a Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting. They're cheap, you meet other business types and you'll learn a ton. Easy on the danish, though... A little "move it, move it" business-style each day will go a long, long way.
